Why I'm Not as Popular As Wayne Dyer



I don’t know if you’ve ever given it any consideration, but I have. I have, in fact, asked myself why I’m not as popular as Wayne Dyer and I think it’s an important question.

Let me make one controversial point clear at the outset. In my view, my book Liberation from the Lie: Cutting the Roots of Fear Once and For All is a better book than anything written by Wayne Dyer. This is just my opinion. I have read several of Dyer’s books and I think they possess both substance and insight. I just don’t think they provide nearly as comprehensive picture of human suffering and yearning than does my own book.

I think the difference is very illuminating. Dyer is an optimist. He believes in human potential. So am I, although I’m not nearly as optimistic as Dyer about people in general.

But there are two great differences between Dyer and myself; 1 – Dyer ignores, completely, the effect on the human persona that history and environment inevitably effect and that is an essential point of view expressed in Liberation; and 2 – Dyer fails to identify and explore the underlying invalidation story that all of us carry with us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Until we see the vast sweep of cultural history and how it gave birth to the universal invalidation experience, we will continue spinning our wheels going from this book to this teacher to this video. Waking up means to wake up to the force that drives the seeking process on its core level.

Dyer is a kind and humane cheerleader, while I am an investigator. Dyer tells you what to do and I invite you to explore your psyche and family/social environment. Dyer keeps it simple, while Liberation is often challenging reading.

And I truly believe there is a crucial role for teachers like Wayne Dyer. Sometimes a beautiful, well-crafted message is just what we need in times of confusion and hopelessness. I personally thank Dr. Dyer for his wisdom.

Dyer provides an open invitation for everyone to get into his self-improvement regimen, while I make it perfectly clear at the outset that Liberation is only for those with the bravery and rigorous self-honesty to seriously question their most sacred beliefs and thoughts.

And that is why Liberation is for the few and Dyer is for the many.

Dyer is almost always an “up” experience, while Liberation is, initially, a “head” experience that journeys to the core of the fragile human heart. I say in Liberation that the portal to the awakened self must traverse the territory of our most self-protected grief and vulnerability. My way is through the forest, while Dyer’s is brightly lit by the sun of his always sunny writing.

But this is also why the message and process of Liberation is so enduring. That which digs deep goes deep and that which stays on the surface of fear with the ever-present promise of hope, pretty much stays on the surface layers.

And this is why Liberation from the Lie will never ever be a best seller. For those of you who have read this book, I urge you to recall the Navajo story of the Hero Twins and how Monster Slayer went out in the times prior to human beings and slew all of the terrible monsters that prevented human life to take root on the soil of the earth. Do you recall if Monster Slayer succeeded?

Even the great power of Monster Slayer could not make the world perfectly safe for human beings, but he did make it safe enough, it’s just that human beings must now deal with the very monsters that even Monster Slayer could not kill: depression, frustration, hopelessness, and hunger.

And it is the Hunger Monster that Liberation is directed to – the hunger to dig deep into the depths of our fragile consciousness and find the light that resides their still in your and my Authentic Self.

Resist the Path Taken by Others and Be Yourself



Resist the temptation to quote other teachers, gurus, or writers.

Resist the temptation to place quotes written by others on Facebook.

Resist trying to be like anyone else.

Find out who you are and be yourself.

When we work to integrate the words of another into our own personality, we are, one believing that these high sounding words actually reflect their writer (or speaker) actual self and, more important, we use these lofty phrases as ways to protect our own vulnerability. Because we are afraid to actually be ourselves without any crutches we use the philosophies of others to model our life. In this way we fail to be true to ourselves.

There is seeming safety in the well-respected and admired. It is also fear of being one’s self.

A better question to ask is this: what am I so afraid of? Do I not trust my own being?

Until you are willing to walk out into the light of life itself as who YOU are, you will continue running to the words of others as a crutch and support. Even if it feels shaky and uncertain – do it.

This is why the Zen Buddhists say, ‘if you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him.’

Don’t waste another moment living a second-hand life. Be you or you will never be.

How Should I Live "My Life"?



Isn’t this the question that all philosophies ultimately point? How should I live my life?

Let’s not get too abstract here. What do I do now? Is there a difference in doing between an enlightened person and someone who is not enlightened? Or are we just throwing up concepts like doing and enlightened?

Before getting all tied up in knots, consider the following: if we cannot determine the right from the wrong, then maybe using these terms is not the best way to respond to this question.

This is what I’ve noticed: there are two types of doing. That which is spontaneous and is not mediated by thought or reflection and that which is mediated by thought and reflection. And even in the second case, what we actually wind up doing, is often not related to how we reflected on a decision. It all just seems to happen quite spontaneously. We might look back on various ‘happenings’ and notice predictable patterns, but even that looking back also just happens.

The more you investigate and really explore this question the more unanswerable it appears to be. I have found that as I have investigated it, it start to loose all of its apparent meaning.

Where does that leave us? It leaves us with a very important realization; that the question itself is meaningless. Thus, nearly all philosophy is also without meaning or purpose.

Now what?

It leaves us with the realization that what we call life is usually meant to mean “my life” and we must realize that how we carve out “my life” from all the rest of life is the very essence of separation and duality. Does that make focusing on “my life” bad (ha-ha)? Obviously not, because we cannot escape the slice of experience that enters into our actual physical and psychological domain.

But what if we were to experiment just a little. Let’s try tossing out the whole concept of “my life”. By “tossing it out” I mean to fully negate its reality – that the expression “my life” is an illusion – utterly without merit or reality.

Where does that leave “us”? Doesn’t it make you feel at least a little uncomfortable? Aren’t you suddenly stuck with nowhere and no place to go? Doesn’t the mind get anxious seeking a place to attach itself – a story to create out of the seeming nothingness of THIS???

Doesn’t it leave us with just THIS???

*Also please notice that the act of watching and observing life is also another act happening in your life. It is not meditation – it is not witnessing. It is “you” doing “something”. That is also a popular false variant of the spiritual life. But don’t worry, watching is, itself, unsustainable. It will morph into something else.

What if an important task falls our way as it inevitably will? Well then – isn’t that just THIS as well? What if a great idea occurs to me, shouldn’t I pursue it? Well, isn’t that also just THIS???

Thought and feeling are seen to be not unlike every other “thing” – just an object. Some objects strongly attract our attention, but most barely register in consciousness. Notice how insults very strongly attract your attention. What does that mean for you?

But let’s get back our current journey – what then is changed when we intentionally negate the concept of “my life”?

Isn’t it all just this?

Try seeing yourself as both the center and circumference of everything in consciousness. You become this THIS and are all the things that happen in this THIS!

You’ll see that you can’t help being THIS.

But perhaps what you really see is the utter, comical meaninglessness of the question itself. You know exactly how to live your life now, but it might have eluded you because you believed in the concept of “my life”. Now that has taken care of itself. And, isn’t that true liberation?

The Gulf Oil Spill: The Silver Lining




The worst the oil spill in the Gulf becomes the brighter becomes its silver lining.

We live in an age of economic reasoning. Whatever produces more stuff cheaper will always win. Nothing makes more stuff cheaper than products made by oil. Oil is in nearly everything we grow and consume.

The only problem with oil is that its poison. Stuff made by oil is often resistant to natural degradation in the environment. Plastic bags floating in the oceans have now created actual islands of garbage. These vast and rapidly growing islands of plastic are, literally, immense floating death zones. One in the western Pacific is larger in area than the state of New Jersey.

As oil has become increasingly scarce, its sources of exploitation have become proportionately more technically challenging, as well as posing much greater threats to the planet’s rapidly deteriorating environment. The precipitous decline of environmental quality is now the cause of the planet’s greatest plant and animal extinction since the demise of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. But unlike every other of the world’s great extinctions, this current extinction event is caused by the actions of only one of its species; human beings and oil is a very large part of that cause.


The age of economic reasoning is dominated by the most powerful economic actors: namely the largest corporations and their partners in government. These actors will always do what comes most easily, which is to grow the current economy. We do that by creating opportunities to make more stuff. And the reason why we are addicted to the most stuff is simple. Those societies that have the most stuff per capita are deemed the most successful. It doesn’t matter what kinds of stuff, just as long as its stuff.

Thus countries like the United States with its cheap food and access to an unrivaled quantity of stuff are thought of as the best places to live because an American can own the most stuff.

This is the inevitable outcome of economic reasoning. What may first appear to be a social good evolves to becoming a form of social enslavement. We are now the slaves of stuff and the planet is now a victim of stuff.

The BP Gulf Oil catastrophe shows us in the most graphic terms how this way of life is killing the planet. Although very few people are likely to admit it, but we are really at a decisive crossroads. We can continue to buy the corporate/political line that the oil based way of life is our only option, or we can evolve in the direction of wisdom and we can stop and reflect on how this way of life is not only effecting the whole array of life on earth, but how it enslaves people to the universe of stuff and garbage.

Is this what we really want?

This is a case where wisdom must merge with strength of conviction. The planet is really not served by tiny enclaves of hippies who live off the grid. The urgency to make changes to our economic and political structure is really on the shoulders of every one of us.

We have to bring to an end the age of cheap stuff produced by oil. We must do this now. No more drilling in the oceans. No consideration of tar sands. We must make the transition to living on renewable energy sources and we must do this now. If this means large-scale reductions in the amount of stuff in our lives and less immediate convenience, then so be it. We have to move this discussion from the realm of imagination to actual daily life. We must wake up to the carnage we are wrecking on the earth’s well-being and on ourselves. And we must be willing to make the sacrifices in stuff to make this possible. We no longer have the luxury of waiting for some imaginary future where science and technology will make this transition possible without some sacrifice. This is the revolution of the soul and its time is now.

This means to say an unequivocal NO to the rapacious demands of our largest industrial and financial corporations and their government pawns. This will mean that we must take to the streets and do what needs to be done to move the locus of control from the hand full of corporate warlords to the masses of people who love and care for the earth.

This means that the age of economic reasoning must come to an end. The horrible death zones in the Gulf of Mexico and the Oceans, must become our symbols. Add into that our collapsing state and national economies that have bought into the financial schemes of the Goldman-Sachs of the world. It’s always the little guy that gets hurt. This must end. Those responsible for the killing of the planet, those that sell us the idea that life is fundamentally about acquiring stuff, those must pay for the consequences of this philosophy. The little guy has already paid enough.

The rich and powerful nearly always benefit from catastrophe. Everyone and everything else pays for their recklessness. Let us now set the balance and restore the well being on the only living planet in the known cosmos. Let us celebrate the preciousness of life in this crucial time.

Make the time of reckoning possible. If this spill motivates us to finally do the right thing, then will all of its pain, it will have turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

One Day I'm a Great Guy and on Another I'm an Asshole



One of these stories is true.

I am a great guy. I feel great and I do great things. A lot of people have really been impressed by what I have done in my life. Does this surprise you? It probably doesn’t, because you probably think I’m smart and evolved and cultured and so many other wonderful things. Isn’t life great?

But suddenly I discover:

I’m an asshole. I feel shitty and I haven’t done crap in my life. So many people know that I’m an asshole. This probably doesn’t surprise you.I assume that you know that I’m a total bullshitter and a big phony. Life can really suck.

Ahhhhhh – stories.

Life is really going to open up for me. Life is hopeless. I’m running out of money and I am so fucked.

I would die to get enlightened. Enlightenment is bullshit.

People are basically good. People are basically assholes.

The tea is getting cold. I gotta go. Bye.
