Living Life Awake


The key to awakening is complete relaxation – this means to see through, completely, the veil of applying effort to bring about or change any situation.

Step 1

Why don’t you try that right now. The goal of this exercise to feel the self that is always here. This Self is here in exactly the same way no matter what is happening in your life. When we deeply relax, we are allowing the universe of effortlessness to arise as our very selves. Notice how this effortlessness is always there. It cannot be willed away.

What is happening when there is absolutely no effort to create or do anything?

That is the first step.

Step 2

Now – intentionally do something – anything, and while the doing is happening continue feeling the effortlessness that is always there no matter how demanding or challenging your current situation. Just feel it. It’s always there and it’s always available. It can’t be willed away. This is the background of experience that we tend to ignore. Now we are allowing just the opposite to happen. What was foreground, the doing – the happening, is now the background and what was background is now foreground.

The more aware you are of this effortlessness that underlies every aspect of your life in every moment, the more you will experience your awakened self. You will notice that you will be your very best when you are not attached to any event or any outcome. Everything just is as it is.

This doesn’t mean a life of bliss – pain is as much a part of life as is pleasure, but there is an immense lifting of weight when we just fall back into this perfect effortlessness that is our true home – always. We deal with pain in any way that makes sense to us.

Step 3

Look at something outside and notice how the mind clearly distinguishes between the objects you see outside and your body/self – really feel that difference. The mind experiences the trees and the sky differently from how it experiences your thoughts and feelings. This is the key illusion.

Now experience even these most personal body sensations as no different in substance than the objects you see outside of the window. When you apply this principle to everything in your experience, you will sense an entirely new sense of self, as well as, an entirely new sense of the passing play of the universe. Now notice how the effortlessness views them as essentially the same – they are each the contents of awareness. Just as you are not the objects outside, you are not the body with its constant current of sensations, thoughts, and feelings either. Also notice that the effortlessness of the trees mirrors the effortlessness of the sensations, thoughts, and feelings. They all seem to happen automatically. The more free you are of attachment to the body, which manifests as believing that you are the body, the more open you will be to the effortlessness that underlies all experience.

Step 4

If you’ve been following this blog, you will have noticed that I have expressed various passions – especially about politics and the environment. This is the expression of this body in the world of action and appearance. As you live more and more from the domain of effortlessness, you will be able to express the passions of your body as they need to be expressed. You will know that they are true for you for they arise from effortlessness, just like everything else that arises in the universe. They are your body’s signature on the world. They are as real as those trees and sky you see outside. They are an integral part of this life in this moment.

But unless you are rooted in the condition of never needing to achieve anything those passions will reflect your internal inadequacy belief. How they appear and how they are expressed will be filtered by a thought – body attachment that is not an expression of your Authentic Self. They will be forms of ego manifestation on the plane of appearance.

Each time ego arises, and it will arise in the form of needing to achieve something or change something in your immediate life, just try connecting to the universe of effortlessness that allows everything to be just as it is and also releases the inadequacy thought – which is the energetic center that keeps the dark side of the ego alive.

There is a fine line differentiating the Authentic from the false. To see this line can take time and some internal reflection.

The ego will arrive through your internal monologue and will want to express itself through your body’s emotions. But you will know when you’re truly breaking through the wall of the false-self when you start becoming tired of anything that arises from your body that expresses your conditioned and habitual thinking process. It will just feel like a burden that you don’t feel like carrying anymore. You will grow tired of your thinking and your projections and as you grow tired of them, they will play less and less a role in your life.

And then … one day … you are free.

    Thanks for this post. Your last few lines were exactly what I needed to read right now: “But you will know when you’re truly breaking through the wall of the false-self when you start becoming tired of anything that arises from your body that expresses your conditioned and habitual thinking process. It will feel like a burden that you don’t feel like carrying anymore. You will grow tired of your thinking and your projections as you grow tired of them, they will play less and less of a role in your life.” There are times when I literally can not stand hearing my own thoughts and I just don’t know what to do to get relief.
