Greed

As Paul Krugman’s op-ed piece in today’s New York Times points out, Ireland had a true economic miracle, but over time this “miracle” gave way to a housing frenzy fed by the banks and speculative real estate developers. As the economy prospered they fed on this prosperity and worked together to create a massive housing bubble. When the bubble burst, the country was thrust into economic ruin and is now facing deep austerity prospects that will hurt everyone except the bankers who are international and comfortably insulated from assuming losses or any other form of responsibility for the social violence they have happily wrought. The situation in Ireland mirrors that of the United States and many other nations.

This is how it happens. In stable economies banks are rather boring players on the economic stage. They exist to keep people’s money relatively safe and to lend money in a regulated manner to create and maintain prosperity. The rules of lending need to be regulated to protect all the savers who place their hard-earned cash to the banks in trust. Savers tend not to want to have their money played by a group of gamblers who game the table and stack everything in favor of themselves.

Thus the clever bankers used the nation’s prosperity to express their repressed greed. But here’s the important part. As they made themselves grotesquely rich, they used a very small part of their money to buy their government. Politicians come cheap and they are more than happy to become whores for the super-rich friends. Thus the financial sectors own the governments of the United States and Ireland and most other places that experienced a big housing bubble from which they made their trillions. Greed and wealth made them extremely powerful.

Because they are, in essence, the government itself, they enforce the laws in ways that can only favor them and hurt everyone else. They create the policy that keeps them perfectly secure from criminal or civil prosecution, that maintains gratuitously low tax rates for the ultra wealthy and makes sure that what was the middle class pays for their continued fiscal vulgarities through painful austerity measures that affect the super-rich not in the slightest.

In this way they create a two class society. The middle class is hollowed out and transformed into the upper Lower Class and the wealthy become much richer, even as the local economies collapse into penury. The ultra-rich will scream that we cannot afford large deficits in order to leverage their impact on creating the austerity measures that enable them to get a lot richer even in times of economic crisis and decline.

Thus the bankers and their friends in the healthcare and military industrial complexes get to run the whole show. And then they speak speak as if we’re all in this together. We aren’t.

The truth is, they treat everyone but their class as ignorant rubes. They keep the rubes entertained by the idiotic television shows that are everywhere and through fear that unless we follow the orders they demand of us, that things could get so much worse.

It’s time to see reality. This is all part of waking up to what is real. It’s time to see these people (and they are discrete individuals with names and addresses) as the blood-sucking parasites they truly are. It’s time to express our need for basic justice. We must cease listening to any politician owned by this class. It’s time we take to the streets. It’s time that we refuse to swallow their ceaseless lies.

The point is not to spread the wealth. The point is to live a life that is just and fair. This class is truly a cancer on the world. The time has come to re-invent civilization as something that can exist in harmony with all of our fellow human beings and the animals and plants that make this world a wonder in a very cold universe. That time has come and that time is NOW!

President Rand Paul – Could He Be the Bizarro Obama?

"President" Rand Paul

A NOTE TO READERS:

No one reading this post should think for a nanosecond that I support Rand Paul or anyone else affiliated with the Tea Party or the Republican Party for president or even dog catcher (ok, maybe dog catcher). The point of this post is entirely ironic. America elected a Senator with two years of experience in that office (Obama) who campaigned as if he were a progressive. However, once he attained office, he has pursued a course that would have made George Bush proud.

In this post, I’m doing the opposite. I chose Rand Paul because he will have served two years in the Senate (like Obama) and has aspirations to be president. He has a youthful and is out of the Beltway, qualities that he also has in common with Obama. He’s also the kind of right-wing nut case that you’d least expect to carry forward a progressive policy agenda, just as Obama appeared to be just the person who really could enact change we could believe in.

But what if he was really the Bizarro Obama? The bizarro Obama (Rand) might look a little like this.

The Fantasy

In a stunning reversal, Rand Paul, after serving only two years as a US Senator from Kentucky, became the 45th President of the United States. He has become the capstone of the continuing sweep of Republicans into national office that began in 2010, as Americans became increasingly disenchanted with the inability of the Obama Administration to effect the kind of change his millions of supporters had expected of him.

Running on a platform called “Real Change for Real Americans”, President Paul shocked the country with his first order of business, the absolute end of all combat operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan and the immediate return of all but essential personnel from that theater of war. Buoyed by the new Republican Majority in the Senate and committed to sweeping deficit reductions, Rand’s order was supported by majorities in both Houses of Congress. Even skeptical Democrats seemed inspired by the young President’s bold initiative.

President Rand also ordered an immediate strategic review of all American military bases abroad with a keen eye in reducing the massively bloated Defense budget saying, “That if we fail to take on the deeply embedded special interests that have been choking off our national capacity to invoke Real Change, we will, ultimately, fail as a nation.” As part of this order, President Paul, with the support of his Cabinet have targeted approximately 115 bases for closure by the end of 2013, noting that “We must streamline our military to meet the challenges of an increasingly turbulent world.”

In a sharp reversal with his Democratic predecessor, President Paul announced the creation of a massive jobs program called, A Return to Progress. Using a combination of innovative tax incentives and discretionary spending, A Return to Progress forges a new partnership with the country’s private sector. The new program will provide private and public jobs to approximately 7 million currently unemployed Americans. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that the jobs program would over the next 5-7 years, “essentially pay for itself” by providing significantly larger tax revenues from the newly created jobs. The Program envisions an America that would be energy independent by creating enterprises that would nurture the growth of renewable energy sources and cutting edge green technology. Paul said that the United States would become the “go to” place for innovation in both sustainable energy production. Outside experts who have seen the plan anticipate that its implementation could reduce greenhouse gases by as much as 75% by 2025.

Continuing the President’s fiscal initiative for a Fair Tax Plan for his Great Nation project, President Paul has put into a place an entirely re-fitted and simplified tax plan that would dramatically shift America’s tax burden away from the middle class. He said, “We must make it possible for this country to get back onto its feet again and to do this we must realize that our strength lies in a vibrant middle class and we cannot achieve this objective unless we soberly examine the many weaknesses and disparities in our current approach to tax burden allotments. As a matter of fundamental fairness, taxes must be paid by those who can most easily afford them.” In keeping with his promise of sweeping tax cuts for nearly all Americans, President Paul announced the closing of hundreds of loopholes previously exploited by America’s richest 2% including the immediate ending of the hedge fund maximum tax rate of 15%. In addition, America’s wealthiest will be asked to contribute their “fare share” to make it possible for America to compete with the rising economic powers of China, India, and Brazil. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet each hailed the program with the words “It’s about time”.

Finally, as part of his Healthy America Program, President Paul successfully dismantled the hopelessly convoluted and widely condemmed “Obamacare” and instituted a National Single Payer Healthcare Program called Healthy America. This program is designed to compete with private insurers in an open marketplace. It will offer far less expensive plans focusing on Prevention, as well as Major Medical programs at ess cost to all Americas irrespective of their work status. America’s Federation of Private Health Insurance has called “foul play – we cannot conceivably compete with a national single-payer system. The president has “gamed” the system against us.” In response, the President coolly reminded them that he, like them, is a believer in a free and open market and that if they are unable to compete successfully with the public program, then the market has, indeed, spoken. Americans cheered the new health initiatives as a “way out” of the hopelessly convoluted and vulnerable plan put into place by the Democratic Administration of ex-President Obama.

In another issue that has troubled millions of Americans, President Paul has announced the immediate end of the so-called War on Drugs. Saying, “we have suffered enough”, President Paul submitted to Congress a plan for “peace in our country” by substituting a combination of jobs training and community-based treatment coupled with decriminalization of many previously illegal drugs. In addition, President Paul has urged Congress to make the recreational use of marijuana legal. With the hope of making this “admittedly radical” idea palatable to a dubious America, President Paul as called on the creation of an oversight office that would recognize reasonable parity with such products as beer and spirits as simply a part of how this country relaxes. Paul said, “we need to recognize that we cannot have peace in our beleaguered inner city communities and with our younger Americans until we come to realize that this War on Drugs has brought us way too much war and has torn apart far too many of our most vulnerable communities.” Senate Majority Leader Hatch promised to work with the President on the Peace initiative with the understanding that we cannot, as a nation, continue a war that we cannot conceivably win without sacrificing a whole generation of younger Americans. New York’s Al Sharpton chuckled breathlessly, “I don’t know about you, but this white guy from Kentucky is just ‘blowin’ me away.”

“This is just the beginning”, the President said. “We foresee a nation dedicated to real deficit reduction, realistic military spending, and a genuine national capacity to do what Americans do best, lead the world in innovation. For too long we squandered our energy in a financial sector that strangled our ability to compete in a starkly different 21st century world. In addition, we spent our national treasure on a military industrial complex based on the hopelessly outdated vision of a 1950s world. I promised Real Change for Real Americans and this is what we are accomplishing.”

President Paul is anticipated to introduce dramatic new legislation in many other essential areas, such as:

  • Americans for America – a program designed to bring justice and fairness to all American communities by addressing the immense income disparities that have brought about the bane of two Americas. Rand has commited the country’s jobs and revenue programs to bring about a country with a vigorous middle class, as the Founders intended. One where income inequalities are productively addressed to restore harmony where there was discord and equal opportunity, where there was scarcely opportunity at all. Paul has noted, “It’s not class warfare when it just makes sense for all Americans.”
  • Two giant energy initiatives called: New England Runs on Wind and Bright Ideas for a Solar West highlight the President’s drive for real energy independence. Under the President’s Energy Independence Now! program, he said, “We can wait no longer. Our nation will be reduced to energy enslavement unless we can produce clean and renewable energy within our own borders for the benefit of all Americans.” Energy Independence Now! plans to reduce oil and gas imports by up to 50% by 2020.
  • Every Child Matters – a new educational program that will substantially improve educational opportunity for those kids who need it most. “Until we recognize the inherently unfair playing field caused by our outdated reliance on property taxes to fund public education, far too many of our best and brightest children will be left in the rubbish heap of poverty and inequity.” This plan will restore a balance in educational resources between rural, suburban, and urban school districts. In addition, the plan intends to use cutting edge research in academic achievement to inspire a new generation of teachers to bring about a real revolution in our nation’s schools.

In other words, I fantasize about an authentic bizarro Obama.

Fear. Hate, Division, and Ignorance – Yeah, We're Talking about Republicans and the Tea Party

Buddha said that the difference between the awakened and unawakened is ignorance. Buddha was right.

Right now, America is in a love affair with ignorance. It’s not a beautiful thing.

The Republicans rail against the new healthcare law, which they disdainfully call Obamacare. They say, “get the government off our backs.”

Yet they just love Medicare, an entirely government run program providing health care for the elderly.

Do you want to know the difference between the new Healthcare law and Medicare? Medicare, unlike the new law, is a lot more radical. It’s a single payer system and the single payer is the government. The only problem with the new law is that it is a Republican program. It keeps the power in the hands in the private sector and they couldn’t care less about our health. They care only about one thing and that’s their bottom line. They have shareholders they are legally bound to serve. As a result the new law if full of loop holes that work against the needs nearly all of us.

What Obama should have worked for was a single payer option that would allow people to choose between the government program and the private programs. After all, the Republicans can’t stop extolling the virtues of a free market and this would provide a free market choice for all of us. But they knew that the private sector could not compete against a government program. Thus the well-being of massive corporations won out against the well-being of people. And that is the true mission of the Republican party and their millions of flunkies – known as ordinary Americans who refuse to think, refuse to explore, and refuse to open themselves up to truth.

They are ignorant. They are slaves of their hackneyed beliefs. They love a hateful and wrathful god. In effect, they love to hate. People like Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Michelle Bachman are their haters in chief. They lie, distort, and demean virtually everything that is good and decent in our world.

For the Republicans, this new Republican program isn’t greedy enough. They don’t want to force private health insurers to provide for pre-existing conditions or healthcare for chronically ill children. They would prefer if these non-rich people people would just die and stop bothering their corporate overlords.

When it’s all said and done, the Republicans really stand for the glorification of their ultra-rich masters and the exploitation of everyone and everything else. It’s not beautiful. It’s really very ugly.

The Republicans say that only the private sector can save our sick economy. Yet it was this same private sector that is the root cause of our economic decline, as well as the millions and millions of foreclosures based, initially, on their legions of snake-oil salesman and then on the assault of millions of vulnerable customers who they breezily and illegally drove from their homes – the very symbol of the American Dream.

They are thugs and criminals and deserve to be treated as such.

They claim that they are for the ordinary, hard-working Americans. Then how could we ever explain that their financial supporters are some of the richest and most powerful people in the world, like the Koch Brothers and other billionaires? How could you explain that they insist to keep their financial supporters a secret? They must remain a secret, otherwise, you would realize the truth – the truth that you are being used and exploited – that you are dupes of the wealthy – you will realize that your ignorance makes their power possible. The more compliant you are, the more exploited you will be.

The Republicans deny global climate change. This is just a small part of their universal contempt for science in general. For they also reject the whole field of modern biology, which is based on evolution. Sarah Palin and many others claim they are not monkeys. I agree they are not monkeys – they are something infinitely worse; they are ignorant, ambitious entertainers who express their hatred through their all but limitless personal ambitions. And what is their ambition based on? It’s based on nurturing hate and division. They deny their deep-seated racism, but they have much more in common with their Nazi – Black and Brown shirted predecessors than they would ever admit.

There are 20 Republicans currently running for the Senate. Not one of them links the actions of people with global climate change. This is earth-killing ignorance of the first order. We are called to reject this agonizing ignorance and celebrate the truth.

Income inequality is more extreme in the US than any other time in our history. The top 2% of Americans own and control about half of the capital in this country. The mission of the Republicans is to make this group even richer. For they are nothing but whores and the super-rich are their Johns. Those that support these enemies of everyone and everything (except the super-rich) are in love with their own rapists. This is the social Fear-Self in action on a massive scale (see Liberation from the Lie to learn much more about Fear-Selves). They express their shared self-invalidation through supporting groups and policies that assure their continued debasement.

They wrap themselves in the tawdry costumes of god and country and besmirch both. This is a white, Christian country. We are open to Blacks and Hispanics as long as they don’t challenge that fundamental truth. They love to draw the line between us (Christains, the ignorant, the phony patriots) and them (Muslims, progressives, those concerned with the well-being of our communities and the earth itself). They love to mock those who love what is true. They love to demean and disparage. They are smug in their self-confidence and certain in their underlying self-hatred.

They love power more than anything else. For they know, down deep, that they lack the power the believe they need to build their edifice of hate and division. In seeking all of the power, they are driven to deprive every one and everything else of the power they might already possess. Thus this is truly a conflict and we need to stand up to the challenge.

We do that by being open and embracing of the truth that is everywhere and in everything. Where there is division, we must seek to bring connection. Where there is hate, we must dedicate ourselves to connection. Where there is ignorance founded on division, we must commit ourselves to connection. But getting to connection may require us to make the division between them and us even wider. Just as Krishna advises Arjuna to accept his responsibility as a killing warrior and the battlefield of life, we must now assume the weapons of conflict and dedicate ourselves to victory.

It’s all part of the cyclical nature of existence. We are living in the darkest of times. We bring the light by embracing that same light. Let the progression to light happen through our collective energies and bring all that is false to the light of what is true.

Is Life a Burden?

Sisyphus

It seems that right now everything just … sucks.

Morons and fascist wannabes have taken over the airways. The planet’s whole ecosystems are in chaos and decline. Extinction is the main theme of the natural world. I read today that about 20% of the world’s plants are facing extinction and I also read that about 80% of the world’s drinking water is under threat of contamination.

And no matter how crappy things appear to be, we seem to know in our hearts that they will probably get worse.

How do we deal with all of this “bad” news?

I will speak only from my own perspective.

The persona who takes on these problems as his own lives as a “fear-self” who has created a compelling story that these stories are his to bear. He can use his visibly passionate caring as a way to separate himself from the ignorant rabble. Or his fear-self can use all of this information to allow himself to identity as a single suffering victim among the billions of other victims. The moment we assume that an object is what we are, our reservoir of fear can use this object to create a persona to compensate for the fear that is inwardly denied. Or, he can assume ownership of the object and take it on as “his” burden. This is what most of do.

The “fear-self” that labels this information as “bad” has passed judgment on systems and processes that, in truth, he cannot understand. If nothing else, natural history shows us just how incredibly resilient the earth is. No matter how pervasive the loss of habitat and the extinction of so many species, the earth will always bounce back with or without human beings.

Thus as much as I find the news painful and frustrating, I also realize that the ever-bright “I am” transcends the spectacle and possesses the tranquility to deal with problems as best as his body/mind can do in the moment they arise. I know that “I am” is neither the source of these problems or their solution. Rather, the light of “I am” allows the seeing to happen just as it does. The seeing pierces my heart and engages the body/mind in the challenges of the time with compassion and focus, but it does not define the “I am”.

In this way, life can never be a burden. Rather, it is light filled with feeling and fleeting knowing.

Instead of being a burden, the “information” received by this body is the very invisible blood that connects us all with everything. It is the unavoidable profound connections that bind us together in this time and place. All of the light manifests inside each and all of us.

Where is the burden of life? It cannot be found.

Seeing the False as the False: The Wound of the World, the Wound of the Self

The pathway that leads to wisdom and truly is wisdom is seeing the false as the false. Conversely, the definition of ignorance is believing the false to be true.

The purpose of nearly all theology is not to liberate a person from the illusions of ignorance. Rather, it is console the human being thrust into a life of sacrifice, toil, and suffering. Thus, the real purpose of theology is to do exactly the opposite; it is to make bearable the trials and tribulations of this life by concocting absurd stories the seek to undermine direct experience and create hopeful fantasies of the world to come. And one of its “red” flags is it insistence on obedience by its followers. Any system that depends on obedience, with the threat of punishment (and even eternal damnation) to control its flock is just another manifestation of external authority and control on our lives. Religion is a source of profound personal disempowerment.

So much for what passes as spiritual philosophy and teaching is just wishful thinking created by an ego desperately clinging onto false beliefs. Even if such fools do not mention god, they imply a god who only loves and that love is all there is. Thus everything we experience as the absence of his love is just our error. Such philosophies loudly declare that all is perfect and all is love.

Nothing could be further from the truth. This is just mindless belief, no different from the mindlessness of any other orthodoxy. People love hearing about how loving and perfect the universe is, because, just like their mindless teachers, they are living from a place of underlying insufficiency and inadequacy. They need to believe in a loving and perfect universe in order to compensate for their own experience of pain and suffering, as well their feelings of self contempt.

Religious leaders have been spouting this kind of nonsense ever since the first people were divided into the singular ruler and the many who are ruled. The division of labor between master and slave began a time when “wishful” thinking became essential to quell the restless and oppressed soul. The agony of laboring through a life without meaning created the need to create an alternative universe governed by vastly different, but entirely imaginary rules.

This is exactly, the message and the truth that people would prefer not to hear. Rather, people, in pain, want to be consoled, they want to be soothed, they want to stay asleep. They need to have their fear-based feelings of insufficiency to be compensated through a psychological projection that is designed to keep them safe and at distance from the underlying connection with truth.

From the very start, we learn the very hard lesson that if we insist on being ourselves, we will pay the price of isolation and condemnation. In order to “earn” the love of our parents, we must do as we are told. We must tow the line. We cannot indulge in our own imagination, we cannot explore as we wish, we cannot express our true feelings, or if we are given some rope, that rope has very definite limits. If we are to “earn” the love of our parents we need to be as they wish and project us to be. Thus the false, fear-based life is given form. The same lessons are repeated in school. Do as you’re told and you will be rewarded. And then we finally enter the work force, where we must do as we are told or risk the terrible consequences.

Then religion steps in mirroring the same cruel blueprint. If you don’t tow the line, you will be punished and not just in the here and now, but for all of eternity! The capacity of civilization to punish, negate, and minimize knows no bounds.

All of these lessons are about obedience. We are deterred from every being ourselves through the threat of punishment and the removal of love and validation anytime we cross the line.

This is the very world of pain and suffering. So out of this crippled world of the Wound (see Liberation from the Lie) comes the theology of love and perfection. We cannot make any sense of this crazy world without such a theology. It comes in many forms. One of the popular ones with roots in India asserts that all of this complexity and madness is just illusion, that the suffering human being and her world is no different from a dream. Some religions promise that if you’re a very good boy or girl, then you will be rewarded by a life in heaven.

It’s always the same – if you believe, if you behave, then, and only then will you be rewarded. This world of pain and suffering must create this theology of goodness and false liberation. Without such a theology we can only resign ourselves to the unacceptable and cruel. Without this theology, we might even become revolutionaries of the truth. That would threaten all of the institutions (starting with the family) that negate the sacred, Authentic Being.

We are so indoctrinated, that we are blind to any alternative. We have lost touch with who and what we truly are. We don’t know where to turn. We don’t where to start. We don’t remember what it means to be ourselves.

So, when someone says, “just be yourself”, we have a very difficult time figuring out what that means.

Returning to our original theme, to truly see the false as the false, we must see the whole trajectory of the ideology designed to keep us obedient and orderly. We must see this wherever it can be seen, which is nearly everywhere. But that which sees, that which spreads its light onto this world, that very light is as pure as any light that exists in the universe. In fact, it is that very light. That which sees is the very return to the truth. Seeing the false as the false, and thus allowing the truth to arise effortlessly into this very light of being is liberation – freedom – awakening.

The slave finds freedom in first discovering his shackles. For if we are ever to break free of these shackles, the first step must be to see that they are real. Then, and only then, does the true pathway merge into consciousness in this very moment.
